Only three weekends left in the 23rd season at Scarborough Faire including this pending one. The blog has gotten very far behind and the Yahoo group has reached 99 members. The archive at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/scarborough2003/ has quite a wealth of information and there has been a wonderful number of IC (in character) chats between members regarding Scarborough. A very good discussion on footwear also occured. Since the blog was last updated there has also been two weekends and School Days in which I met the wonderful Capt. Marga and our most lovely Queen of Scotland Margaret. The Texas Muskateers and the Texas Wenches have also been terrific fun and great contributors to the Yahoo group. Gallery updates are numerous after each weekend and their bookmarks are added to the list of links...

Much exciting newes to report with the 4th weekend looming overhead. Additional information provided by Lt. Adrian Smythe of the Royal Guard followed by a "IC" (in character) chat with the Admiral of The Scottish Navy Laird Matthew Stewart regarding the Red Bandits of Wales that have been skulking the festival. Also a anounsement regarding the posting of the Texas Muskateers photo gallery by a most gracious representative of their court. Newes regarding the upcoming weekends events "Crafters Extravaganza and Cinco de Mayo Weekend" being collected and posted on the Yahoo group Scarborough 2003 now!

The Red Bandits of Wales cont...

From: "Sir Adrian Smythe"
Date: Wed Apr 30, 2003 4:45 pm
Subject: The welsh from an English perspective

As Lieutenant of the Royal Guard, I care little about where the bandits are from. My good friend Lieutenant Marcus is Welsh, as is His Majesty. The only thing that matters is the safety of the Royals. That being said, the taunting and thievery is growing
tiresome. If anyone is following this, I suggest paying very close attention, you never know what will happen!

Sir Adrian Smythe
Lieutenant of the Royal Guard
Lieutenant of the Gentlemen Spears
In service to His Majesty, King Henry VIII

To this the The Scottish Admiral replied....

Tha Welsh are oor guid cousins and deserve tha same kind o' freedom that we Scots regained some twa hundred years past. We dinna want tae raise tha ire o' tha English crown, as warfare is tha last thing anyone does want in these days o' peace. Howe'er any way we can support tha Red Bandits covertly will be done, by order o' His Most Royal Majesty James, King o' Scotland, ma king and guid cousin. It's all manner of roguery these Welshman are up tae, and what better time than a faire tae help them at it? *grin* O' course there are more important things tae attend tae in Scarborough for we Scots, but this is of import as weel.

Laird Matthew Stewart
Earl o' Lennox

Laird Darnley
And Great Admiral o' Scotland

The exchange continued by Lt. Adrian Smythe...

From: "Sir Adrian Smythe"

Subject: ...and then the scots came

Laird Admiral,
I do know that the scots are in support of these bandits. On my day off, I was eavesdr...I mean I overheard a plea that they did in fact
make to Queen Margaret. The King's own sister! As for better things to do at faire, I can think of only one that is better than seeing to
the wellfare of Their Royal Majesties. Seeking a mother for my son and paige, Samuel.

Sir Adrian Smythe

It is interesting that Sir Adrian and Laird Matthew are on different sides on the issue of The Red Bandits of Wales as Laird Matthew is known to be fond of the English Royal Guard and the good Lt. Smythe as well. Self described the Admiral says, "Laird Matthew sees the matter concerning the Welsh, though, as much as he loves and supports them, as a sideshow. His real dual purpose
in Scarborough is to protect and accompany his beloved aunt Queen Margaret and to serve as ambassador to Henry VIII (problem with that being he's the worst choice EVER for a diplomat!
".

Huzzah for the Scottish Navy and Huzzah for the Royal Guard!

This weekend is the Crafters Extravaganza & Cinco de Mayo Weekend according to the 2003 Special Events Calendar for the 23rd
Anniversary Season. I believe these are relatively new events to the festival providing a focus on our wonderful craftworkers and honoring the traditional holiday. Looking for more details, highlights according to the calendar include; Shopping specials and craft
giveaways throughout the faire. Special Cinco de Mayo celebrations all weekend long.

Weather Forecast...
Saturday - Partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Windy. Highs in the mid 80s. Chance of rain 20
percent.
Sunday - Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Windy. Highs in the mid 80s

I made one of the after parade proclamations last weekend as I did not get to march and got a break just as the procession went past my shop so I was able to chase it to it's conclusion. I hope if I am not able to strut in the parade that I at least make it to the chess
match field for the post parade proclamation again as it was a good show. I would also like to make a pub sing and a closing gates last huzzah on one of the weekend days. I will have to plead to my manager, I think she will assist as she is a good lady. I sure do
enjoy playing more than working, however I want to show them I am at least willing to work whenever and where-ever they tell me and need me to. This is also my wife's birthday weekend and I hope to buy her a mead or three before the weekend is over.

Subject: More on this weekend at Scarborough Faire

As previously posted this is Crafters Extravaganza & Cinco de Mayo Weekend at the 23rd Annual Scarborough Faire. On the official website they have the addidtional information...

Children's Pinatas at 2pm in the Castle Pavilion each day.

Receive ONE FREE TICKET for every $250 in Crafter/Artisan receipts presented from 2pm-7pm at the gazebo outside the Exit Gate. Limit 4 tickets per person and receipts must be dated May 3 & 4, 2003.

"Be sure to peruse the wares of our visiting merchants - they're here for a good time, but not a long time."

Shoppe Name: The Pillow Lady
Description: Tapestries and Tapestry Pillows

Shoppe Name: Fire Gems
Description: Dichroic Glass Jewelry

The web page: http://www.scarboroughrenfest.com/crafts/crafts.htm has a list of all the returning craftworkers, 200 of them anyway. And the web page http://www.scarboroughrenfest.com/crafts/new.htm has about 14 new ones.

I am looking for a schedule of various craft demos; I know the Devonshire does soapmaking demos periodicaly during the day. There is also a small forge outside of the Angel Sword shop that is worked during the day. I will post this schedule as and if I find it, it
should include the glassblower and such.

Also got a giggle today that when the weather thingy on the home page here said it was raining, I called the faire office on some unrelated issue and btw asked them if it was raining there and they told me it was threatening but was not raining. They were enjoying the shade of the clouds. Ahh springtime in Texas. Happy May Day folkes.

Photos of friends and our beloved Queen's Birthday

Capt. Marga and crew, that was a wonderful token you presented our most beatutiful lady with on her birthday. I find it very fitting
since as the Yahoo group for Anne Boleyn description states "Anne Boleyn, born in the early 1500's,exact date unknown, lived until May 19th, 1536." and our own most wonderful Shannon's birthday was celebrated this past weekend. Very appropriate!

It is usually the last weekend in April to the first weekend in June, in Waxahachie, TX (South of Dallas on I 35E). This year it opened
April 12.
I will have some more photos tomorrow, that I took yesterday. It was, in sooth, Shannon's Birthday (the wonderous Queen) and we gave her a small token. I took a lovely snap of Henry pinning the brooch onto her sleeve. I will post it up tomorrow.

There is a huge following at all of the RenFests - not just for the historical or fantasy side. It is a way of finally being able to
recreate and live a portion of history (or fantasy, if you are into trolls, fairies, etc) and feel as if you truly "belong". Scarborough
has been my "home" since 1985 now. We also attend TRF (Texas Renaissance Festival) in Plantersville, TX (outside Houston). I have
not yet had the opportunity to make it to Sterling or Kansas City, but I promise to someday!

Photo of Myryha at the Pub sing, and Henry pinning on the trinket we presented to the Queen are now up in PHOTOS, under Leah's photos.

The Queen was thrilled at our token - just a silver tussey-mussey with purple roses - but we thought she'd like someting slightly
different than the armsfull of roses. She made the King pin it on her right away - I got a fairly good photo!

Dear King Henry and Dear Queene Anne This squire or maiden requests to be a "Welsh" knight, dame, or lady of the court "Not English".
It was signed "Your beloved countrymen and brothers at arms, The Red Bandits of Wales".

Admiral Laird Matthew Stewart replied with the following information...

If you want the skinny on the Red Bandits, I can most certainly provide it. Especially since the Scottish Court is supporting them in an under the table but not entirely secret way (both because they're Celtic cousins and because it falls under the whole "anything that exasperates the English" policy). *grin*

Sir Rhys, the leader of the Red Bandits, is the one giving away the cards like the one you found. It's an attempt to get under King
Henry's skin. You see, Wales in 1533 is an English vassal state and most of its nobles and landlords are English. Only Ireland is as bad off as Wales in the year our Faire is set in.

The Red Bandits are outlaws who also fashion themselves freedom fighters. Very cool and fun to play with guys, both in and out of
character! :~) There are two of them at Scarborough, both of which are members of our cast.

Later!

It's a Highland Fling. The Annual Highland Games Competition will be held this weekend at Scarborough Faire (April 27th & 28th) on the Jousting Field. The types of competition will include; Tossing the 56lb Weight for Height and Distance, Tossing the Caber, Putting the Stone, and Tossing the Sheaf. There are three classes of competition, Men 190 lbs and under, Men 191 lbs and above, and Womens class. Our sources give variation on who will be competing when; it appears the competition will be at 2:30 pm and at 5:30 pm with either Men 190 lbs and under and women on Saturday and mens 191 lbs and above on Sunday or Women's only on Sunday. Be sure to check at the festival this weekend to verify "who" is competing "when". Coy Sevier, the Scarborough Faire General Manager confirmed for me today that registration for competition is already full and invited everyone to watch the contestants perform feats of incredible strength and skill . There will be plenty of traditional Scottish music, dance, events, and attitude! One thing will be sure, there will be lots and lots of scots in our town this weekend.

Additional information can be found at the websites...

and of course at http://www.scarboroughrenfest.com/special/index.htm

In order to prepare to greet our highland neighbors to our town of Scarborough this weekend, I have prepared a short list of Scottish
Gaelic Phrases. Spoken Scottish Gaelic, unlike spoken English, flows unbroken from word to word. Practice saying the whole phrase as if it were all one word, with no breaks in it. Remember that "ch" always sounds like "Bach" or "Loch." And always roll your "R"'s, though not all over the place, more as a simple popped "R" sound.

"Le meas" - pronounced "Lay miss" and means "best wishes"

"Slainte mhath" - pronounced (roughly) "Slan cheVAR" or "Slan juh va", and is a toast meaning "to your good health"

"Alba go bragh" - pronounced "Alba go bra" and means "Scotland forever!"

"Failte" - pronounced "Fal chuh" and means "Welcome"

"Cò an caora sin còmhla riut a chunnaic mi an-raoir?" - pronounced "Kaw uhn KEU-ra shin KAW-la root uh CHOO-nik mee uhn-
royer?" and means "Who was that sheep I saw you with last night?"

"Cha b'e sin caora, 'se sin mo chèile a bha innte!" - pronounced "Chah beh shin KEU-ra, sheh shin moe CHYEH-luh uh vah EEN-tchuh!" and means "That was no sheep, that was my spouse!"

"Usge Beatha" - pronounced "oosh va bay uh" and means "Water of Life" or "Scotch Whiskey"

"Beannachd Leibh" - pronounced "Ben uk leave" and means "Goodbye" or literary "Blessings With You".

Admiral Stewart of the Scoottish Navy provided this additinal information for us...

It should also be said that the Highland Games competition that will be going on this Highland Fling weekend is the state championship. We're very honoured to able to host it! :~) And some of our cast Highland gamers will be competing in the amateur category.

Oh, and there will be some special Scottish themed events hosted by the Scottish Court this weekend as well. *grin*

To which Admiral Stewart graciously answered: There's going to be a Highland Costume Competition as well as a
Bragging Contest. Not sure where or when yet, but we'll all find out tomorrow. :~)

Renmaniac asked Admiral Stewart: It is good to see the Scottish Navy in Scarborough again you are not planning to sacke the towne again much like the last time the Scottish Navy visted our port in 1377, are you?

Admiral Stewart answered: As for whether the Fleet is planning to sack the town, the official response from the Scottish government (*wink*) is: "Oor Fleet has been sent on a purely diplomatic mission tae escort Her Majesty Queen Margaret on Her Majesty's voyage tae meet with her brother King Henry of England and encourage goodwill betwixt tha Coorts of England and Scotland on behalf o' His Majesty King James of Scotland. Just because we have sent oor entire navy tae Scarborough doesna mean we're planning anything untoward. But we canna confirm or deny any such rumours at this time" *grin*

There was terrific reply to a question I posted Lady Frances Parker Trumpington regarding the "script" for this 23rd Anniversary Celebration of Scarborough Faire. Her message back to me gives specific insight into the events during the day and information that should be very interesting to season ticket holders and those attending more than one day...

Yes, it is also what's happening at the post parade proclamation. Closing gate doesn't have that sort of structure, it's purely the
royals having fun. But Opening Gate and Post Parade Proc are both run in this way. The lines are drawn at random, and the names of the people to give them that day are also drawn at random, so there are different lines given by different people every day. Some of them are quite....interesting. *chuckle* It can be a challenge to tie them all together into a coherent bit of improv. But it's a lot of fun
*grin* and it ensures that Opening Gate and Post Parade Proc will never be the same, and hopefully our pass holders and those who come to faire repeatedly won't get bored by it as they'll never know what might happen. Heck, WE never know what might happen! :)

And now a message regarding the pub sing....

As the royal joust ends and before it is time to head for the gate and the last huzzah at final cannon shot, the town is gathering at
the Captains Pub in Pecan Grove for a roaring good time. The lady Katherine Rooke can be heard keeping time with staff on a table top while others produce drum rythmns using mugs, bowls, goblets, thighs, and other things. Various musicians play various instruments and different vocal groups (ie; Scots, Pirates, French, Vikings, Peasants, etc.) represent themselves with their individual styles of singing. I remember previous seasons pub sings included visitations by the Royals on their way to gate and stops by wandering minstrels who were performing at the towne. The kitchens and pub taps are next to the tables and there is a water fountain nearby as well as the playground and privys. The cast members will invite you to sit with them at their tables and join them in ending the day with a round or three of comaraderie.

What some other people have posted about the pub sing...

"If anyone cares to join us at the Captain's Pub each day at 6:00 we would love to have you. We would also love to you spread the word to others that Pub Sing is indeed back. It is at the Captain's Pub every day at 6:00. The songs are all sing along (the daily standards are Spainish Ladies, Companion, Mermaid, Drunken Sailor, and occasionally Irish Rover), the toasts are open to whoever wishes to make one, and the dances (either a waltz or a polka, and Wall's of Lymeric) are open for all to join.
It's fun!!

This is "Russell the Village Idiot"s last season. Hes on the Brothers Stage this year. He was King Arthur at TRF for several years. Then moved on to be King Henry for Az. and Carolina Fest's with Baj as his queen.

>Well, 'Nesto, a lot of the "new" acts this season are simply ones that have returned to Scarborough after an absence, like The
>Swordsmen and Wings of Isis (formerly the Stardancers). *VERY* glad to have all such folk back! :~D
Small correction here, Wings of Isis are still part of the Stardancers. There are now several groups under the umbrella of Isis's company.

Smee and Blogg are returning for the first time in about 19 years.

Roy has a new female jouster. She from Canada and a strong opponet.

Whipboy, he's a comedy / stunt show.

Zilch has also returned.

Iris & Rose, Jim Hancock, Queen Anne's Lace, The Rogues, The Shantyman and all the other musical favorites have returned.

>I would suggest this year's Chess Match (haven't seen it yet, but I've heard raves about it from people not known to be demonstrative in their praise).

Ive also heard its a great show.

Novie has brought back The Pub Sing, a great return to what made Scarborough a success. They ( thank goodness) have removed the Crown Meadow brawl. Some great fights were done, but it was too much all at once and made the end of the day (in my opinion) too violent.

The fair built a ship stage... lets just say, its not Minn's ship. Ill leave it at that. The fair also added several beautiful flower gardens with waterfalls etc. Its great work!!! The sight gardener is incredible. I had the great pleasure of working with him a great deal last season.

We have a great new armory. If you were not aware, Michael (Marcon Armory) died the friday before close last year.

Angie (Ezmeralda) left this world after Irish Fest. this year.

They both will always me remembered as positive force in our fair. They carry all of our love and respect on their journeys.

I hope this helps a bit....

Looking forward to seeing you... Wes B.

I finally got my itinerary nailed down. I will be at Scarby all of Memorial Day Weekend and again on June 1st. On May 31st I'll be in
Galveston scuba diving (So Hayden, while you're in Waxahachie, I'll be in your neck of the woods). The 27th through the 30th I'll be in
Shreveport visiting the parents and seeing friends (Daryl, you want to meet sometime during that time?).

From what I could see the fight was blocked nicely from where I could see and Bill and Jason did a very nice job. Susie thoughtfully gave a prepub sing percussion performance, that helps to publically announce SOMETHING'S GONNA HAPPEN. We're flexing our muscle, and putting back in place the pub sing, we'll keep tweaking it. We are arriving and we are just going to get better. Novie, Jason and everyone up on the front table do an awesome job of keeping the ball rolling. And patrons seem to be enjoying themselves. It will grow, just wait and see...thank you for the feedback.

The excitement has been building for the cast for several weeks now. We were all panting for patrons three weeks ago, so the feeling in the air was electric as we woke up bright and early Saturday morning. After quickly loading the truck, the hubby and I piled in and headed on out. He was mostly dressed, wearing his plaid trews, shirt, doublet and jaunty plaid cap. I, of course, had on chemise and bloomers, since the rest of my outfit doesn't ride well in vehicles.

We got to the SAPA (Scarborough Academy of Performing Arts...the name of the cast) parking lot around 8:05 and gathered everything, hurrying down to Crown Stage, where morning meeting and fight call are held. Fight call wasn't til 8:30, but my seamstress wanted to meet us there early to do a few last minute touches to the new dress. Unfortunately, she wasn't there yet!
So hubby began dressing me, as a proper lady's maid should do *snerk*, lacing me in and so on. The new dress is stunning...I adore it!

After he got me into my clothes, he ran off to do a couple of quick errands before fight call, getting back a few minutes into things. We stretched and everyone began running their fights, practicing and setting them in their minds for the day. The third member of our fight finally showed, and we got down to practicing as well.

Half an hour later it was time for morning meeting. The director got up and gave us her notes for the day, handed out the final rehearsal award, and had folks lead us all in physical and vocal warmups before telling us what Faire Time was and then finally sending us off to play with patrons. Little did we know what was awaiting us outside those gates!!!

The shock of it was enough to make several performers stop in their tracks as they went out the gate. There was a veritable sea of humanity awaiting us out there! The cast, to their credit, all dove right in and began playing up a storm, greeting and meeting, meeting and greeting, drawing people into our world with an enthusiasm that seemed to only get stronger
with each passing moment. It was beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! And then at 9:45 the first cue was given and the first line was said...and the improvisation was on. You see, Scarborough is doing things a bit differently this year. There is NO SCRIPT AT ALL. We are given an opening line, a middle line, and a closing line (different ones every day with different people saying them every day) and we are improvising the entire Opening Gate show, as well as post-parade proclamation too. So those of you who attend every day will get a new show every day. :)

It was a bit different than it had been when we'd practiced it in previous weeks. Before we'd not had to fight the extraneous sounds that fill the morning air during that time. So at times it was difficult to hear, but things did begin to click as the royals were introduced and the various stage acts were given their plugs as well. The fight of the morning commenced and was completed, the closing line was said, the cannon sounded and the gates were thrown open! The crowd began pouring in as quickly as the poor ticket punchers could pass them through, and so began the flood of people culminating in numbers giving us the second largest opening day EVER
at Scarborough Faire!!!

I headed inside at this point, finding a spot near the path where I could play with entering patrons. After a while I spotted my hubby coming toward me, and we joined up to go buy me a new pouch, since my old one just didn't work with the new gown. The old one is made of the same blue material that last year's outfit was made of...this year I'm wearing crimson and grey (for now...have another new dress still being made *grin*). We got to the leather booth and I picked out a lovely black box pouch and a silver clasp,
and the nice gentleman said it would be put together in about half an hour, so we continued on our way. Hubby went off to get to noon Court Dance and I began making my way around the faire.

First stop was Pendragon, to say hi to everyone. Lots of hugs and so on, and the obligatory costume adjustment by Kelly. Someday I'm going to walk in there and she's not going to adjust me ONCE while I'm in there, and I'll die of a heart attack from shock. *laugh* From there it was on around the end and stopping in at several shops on Taylor Lane to let them know that Scot's Court was going to be held along there at 3:30, and that we were starting it with our lane fight. We wanted them to know so that there weren't any problems when our crowd control blocked most of the lane during the fight. Luckily the vendors along that stretch are all very cool people, and agreed that anything the draws large crowds, who will potentially go into the shops after the attraction was done, was a good thing! I'm glad that the majority of Scarby vendors are such cool people. Things go so much more smoothly when there's courtesy on both sides, I think.

Well, then it was onward and upward, continuing toward my usual spot on Eagle Crossing. I got to the bench in time to play a little before we had to get ready to water the parade. And as I'm sitting there playing, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a Moorish musician and eight tiny rein...oh, wait...that is a Moorish musician trailing a certain Friar Merriwether. :) The good friar joined us at the bridge as we waited for parade and played with passersby. Oh, and did I mention the nice long line of Musketeers and their ladies? You know, it's a rough life when you have a good dozen handsome men in tabards all lined up to kiss your hand. Ohhhhhh
the suffering. *snerk* All too soon the cannon sounded, indicating the beginning of the parade, and the watering team all took our places, prepared to give ice and water to those overheated beings who were doing the daily Death March..er...parade. On the walkway above Eagle Crossing, Wulfie, Percy and Fernando had gathered bearing crackers and cheese to toss down to the marchers. There's few things more amusing than watching King Henry VIII standing beneath an archway with his mouth open, trying to catch flying cubes of cheese! *laugh*

The parade made its way by, and the water bearers got a much needed breather, then I was off once more, headed over to where we do Maypole at 2:00. I'm what we call 'colour' at Maypole. I comment and help draw the crowd's focus to what's going on...and I also keep an eye on the safe table, which is where the performers leave things such as baskets and mugs and so on while they're doing the Maypole. Scarborough's Maypole is oriented toward the children (which I privately find very amusing, considering it's origins as a fertility rite), which means that you don't want things swinging around on your belt because you'll probably end up accidently whacking some poor child in the face.

The Maypole went really well, the children and the performers working together to weave the ribbons...and a couple of our weaves were pretty darned good looking!!! Then, according to our plan, the village Hunter got caught in the wrap up and was trapped against the pole! Luckily for the single women of the village, the Governess (myself) and the Mancatcher were on hand to take care of the situation, and we promptly auctioned him off! *laugh*

After our good Liam Hunter was led off by his soon-to-be new bride, I settled for a bit of a rest at one of the tables, and waited for our good Friar Merriwether, as I'd been told that he was heading my way shortly.

The next part of my day is the most strenuous...and what I think of as the most enjoyable! You see, my good readers, this year Lady Frances has teeth! Well, actually, she has swords! A beautiful set of cased rapiers...and she knows how to use them. :) This is demonstrated every day at 3:25 p.m. when we open Scot's Court with a lane fight between myself and two Scottish Navy Captains.

This first day I was a bit nervous. Would we gather a crowd? Would we do well? Would we all remember the choreography and the lines we'd put together so painstakingly 7 months ago? Would everything work out as planned?

I shouldn't have worried. It was GREAT! The fight went fairly smoothly, despite a blown hoop on my part that kept trying to trip me but never succeeded in doing so! The crowd grew as we fought, until the draw was beyond what we'd dared hope for. They cheered and called, and laughed at the lines, and bet on who would win... It was more wonderful than I can ever describe. And when it was done, the crowd stayed for Scots' Court, which was part of why Queen Margaret had liked the idea of starting Scots Court with our fight...so that it would have decent draw.

I think that I floated through the rest of the afternoon...or at least I floated back to my bench on Eagle Crossing after hiding my swords at The Slashed Shoe and putting myself back together again.

Then a second wonderful thing happened. I was sitting on my bench, just being Lady Frances as only Lady Frances can be, and there was a gentleman and his son sitting across from me. They seemed to be enjoying themselves as I bantered with passersby, and they sat for about 20 minutes. Finally they arose and the gentleman crossed to me and said the following:

"My son and I are about to leave for the day, but we just wanted to tell you that we think you're the jolliest person we've seen out here, and that it's a joy to just sit and listen to you."

That, ladies and gentlemen, is why we're insane enough to do this in the heat and the rain, through 2 months of rehearsals and 2 months of performances, gruelling 10-12 hour days without a break. THAT is exactly why...those few people who take a moment to stop and say "You made my day happier." For the times when the Boss comes and says, "Hey, during my exit interviews I had someone tell me that the best part of their day was something you did." For those brief and glittering moments of recognition.
Sure, the recognition from our fellow performers means a lot, but ... *smile*...hearing it from the patrons just makes your day shine like a new-minted penny in the sun.

I almost cried as he walked away. To have someone say that to me on the first day of faire was both a blessing and a challenge. I know I've come a long way, and I have challenged myself to go even further this year.

I played for a time more, then headed up toward where closing gate would be. I found a place where I could play with the people heading out, and even talked a few into staying another few minutes to hear us sing "Parting Glass" before they left. And then the next wonderful moment of my Opening Day occurred.... Jacques walked by, stopped, turned to me and said, "Would you like to fire the cannon?"

What a silly question!!! Of COURSE I would LOVE to fire the cannon!!!! And so off I went, up onto the parapet to get a quick lesson in Cannon 101: Introduction to Cannoneering. *grin* The faces of the other performers when they realized just WHO was firing the cannon that day were priceless. Generally the reaction went something like: "Oh look! Frances is going to....OH MY GOD! They're letting the Governess fire the CANNON???? AUUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!" *laugh*

And so the time came, the royalty came onto the parapet, the goodbyes were said and the song was sung. Queen Anne said "Godspeed and fare thee well!" and I touched the spark to the cannon...

You can FEEL it go through you when you're that close to it! And it's the most amazing thing! (Not to mention QUITE addictive!) And as I revelled in the feeling, and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Rogues playing outside the gates as dancers whirled in joy to the pipes, all that I could do was smile. It was a glorious Opening Day! From the morning meeting to the parapet where Queen Margaret, King Henry and a happy little Governess all shook their groove thangs to the sounds of the Rogues. *laugh*

I know that this is just Saturday, and it's supposed to be the whole weekend, but this has gotten so long already that I don't think I should continue. Let it suffice to say that the wonder of the Opening Weekend did not end there. Later that evening, Latimer asked us if we would be the first people to do our fight at Pub Sing. No one had fought on Saturday, but he wanted us to do ours on Sunday. We agreed, and I have to say that the energy at Sunday's Pub Sing made our fight even better than it had been earlier in the day.

Now, to those who are still with me...gold stars to all of you!

Later this week I shall endeavor to post my musings on the second weekend of faire! I hope you're enjoying!

While I did thoroughly enjoy myself last Saturday there were a couple
of things that did really chap my ar*e ..

1) There is no longer a boche ball field. This was very enjoyable during the afternoon after a few drinks.

2) Directly affecting #1, the game shop is gone! No more games of Cathedral, or any of the other free games they had to offer.

3) Anyone know why Throw Up isn't there this year? They were one of the first shows I would always take friends that have never been to. Very disappointing :(

4) Not sure how I feel about the stage at the White Horse yet. I always like the cozy pub feel of the White Horse, and the White Horse does draw a little more of the drinking crowd. Do the harpist's really want to be around drunks?

5) Security made my friend take off his spiked bracelets before entering as they could be "dangerous" while I can walk around with a blade that could easily cleave a limb off? And others can walk around with 5" spikes coming out of their armour? Completely illogical ..

I will be returning every weekend of course ;-) Just a few things will be missed I guess ...

I think the only thing that REALLY bothered me was (1) The new Corsairs area. These guys sang their asses off all weekend IN THE
SUN. I know that this area isn't completed right now, but sheesh, please tell me how difficult is it to temporarily put up something
for them until the final stuff is done. Even a few cheap sheets sewn together to resemble a sail. And where is a pub close by?? That's
what a few of them like to be around!! I also asked someone at the back pub if business was a bit down because the guys weren't there, I was told yes a little bit & that the tavern folks missed them, too.

(2) The other thing was the harps at the White Horse Tavern. Don't get me wrong, the harp is a beautiful instrument and ParaCelt played well. However, the faire is doing *them* a great injustice by placing them at the bar, where most folks would prefer a bit more of
livelier music. It is also doing an injustice to the tavern and their tip earnings. Personally, I heard the music (harps), but I
didn't listen to it. It was more background music to me. I think that if they would/could alternate perhaps The Shantyman/Iris & Rose,
it could be a bit better, or even just a single fiddle player. And yeah, the Bocce Ball games are gone. I bought my own set of Bocce
Balls at Scarby some time ago. Oh well....
Other than that, I had a wonderful time.... nevermind the bodice burn. I finally bought some sunscreen--- 50!! Now if I can just
remember to bring it next time! :-)

Ahhh, opening weekend was wonderful this year! For the first time in a long time, I actually made opening
gate AT the gate instead of the parking lot. It was great to see returning cast and a few new cast. Lys,
it was wonderful to see your gorgeous, devilish smile again. Stosh, I missed you, babe!! Munke boy and his
hidden camera tactics. It was great to see and hear the lovely gals of QAL and the always funny and
harmonious Corsairs. Which by the way, when are they gonna get you guys some SHADE and another pub??
I saw a lot of changes this year, some good, some not-so-good. There is a lovely little garden with a
water fountain and a few new booths. My personal apologies to ParaCelt for being placed at the pub,
where some cannot appreciate the beauty of your work.
Yeahhh to Schotzie for getting a new booth/location near the creek. The Rogues for being.... well... just
roguish. Leza, it was great to finally meet you in person and thank you for the lovely Welsh song.
I know I am forgetting to mention some, but regardless, this weekend was one for the memory books.
Until next time.

Hmmm.. well I got there while gate was going on, finishing dressing when the cannon went off... so I missed the gate show, and have no Idea what the theme is.. Stood in line for a very long time just to get through the gate, season ticket gate was moving as fast as the ticket taker could punch.. how many tickets could a ticket taker punch if a ticket taker could punch holes...

sorry

finally got to the gate and found the Moor of Dundee right at the gate.. nice to see Leza again, if only for a few moments.. Nice
Guitar though... Once through the gate I ambled in search of a cuppa coffee and a snack, sort of in the general direction of the Gypsy
Stage.. stopped at the bakery shop right by the bridge, mmm good date bars.. watched a little girl throwing a coin in the wishing well and suddenly realized I could hear bagpipes.. the line to get in had taken much longer than I thought.. the Rogues were already playing.. by the time I got there it was too late for the Roguettes!! (if they danced).. thoroughly enjoyed the set, Nelvis showed for a tune!! Nelson seems a bit more integrated and comfortable with the band this year...

once the set was done, I started wandering again, shopping and looking and enjoying the scenery.. my aim was to go catch the corsairs and then Queen Anne's Lace.. got there a little bit into the Corsairs set, but I really enjoyed their Sloop John B.. The new ship stage is HUUUGE, It looks to be at least 30 feet long and 10 deep, maybe bigger. Corsairs looked a little lost on the giant stage, but their singing filled the empty space quite well, a lot more seating there too.. When I sawy Cut Thrust and Run there later, they had plenty of room!

From the Corsairs I went to catch the Queen Anne's Lace show, on another new stage at the cottage, so new that they were saying it had been finished the night before... They were, as usual beautiful to see and hear.. even if Copper got on the stage at the last possible minute.

Again began my wandering in a completely random fashion.. Paused to chat with Ivy at Pendragon, but couldn't find Mary Dane... a while later, I was standing in a lane, trying to decipher where I was and where the nearest flushie was, when a lovely young lady walked up to me and got my attention.. Twas Kyleigh, we chatted for a bit, introducing me to Cecil and a tiny young lady whose name I have completely lost.. Kyleigh gave me a hug and helped to orient me... nice to see her again..

during my traipsing, I managed to wander past a man hammering away on a dulcimer, playing Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor.. talk about some quick hammering... woof, he was exhausted when he finished.. but he played it beautifully..

I got to watch Iris and Rose do their thing.. always a scream,

by the middle of the afternoon, I was pooped, hot and tired, so I reminded myself that I had a season ticket and could come back several times, and that the real point was to have fun, not kill myself..

All in all I had a wonderful time, enjoyed being in the midst of a crowd, and alone at the same time..

Saturday, April 12, 2003

Well that was fun. It was a wonderful opening day. The waiting was finally over and the pleasure has returned.
One of my cameras malfunctioned after 5 photos and the other camera I personally carried experienced a memory dump for the first time losing 19 flemish portraits. The folks I worked with were wonderful and in the brief time I got out of the booth I quickly ran around and saw all I could in 30 minutes.
Woke the family up early saturday morning and got dressed watching Channel 8 on the television which had the WFAA Spirit of Texas mornining news on and they showed that they were going to have a segment regarding opening day at Scarborough Faire. We watched as they showed clips of The Swordsmen and Don Juan and Miguel shows. Numerous news-shots of various performers and around the site. The real treat came next with a live interview with Richard and Shannon and the newscasters asked questions and the King and Queen answered. They asked if they had any of the turkey legs yet and about the days events. It was Family Adventure weekend at the faire and WFAA's Families First was sponsoring free admission for up to 3 children under age 12 with each page adult. What a deal, it made you want to go round up the neighbor kids. The news story on television definately wetted our appetites and we quickly got into the car and left for Waxahachie.
Upon arriving at the site I went to the privys, our new royal flushes beat a privy with the king any day. It is a wonderful thing seeing rennies in the morning, wearing tights and brushing teeth. I passed the bat wing people setting up their wares on my way to the kitchens in Pecan Grove. The kitchens were busily getting ready and everything looked clean and well setup. Things are fairly organized and the staff is very experienced and snapping to work together quickly. Everyone was busy making sure everything would be ready including Richard Holeyfield, one of the owners, as I passed him I saw he was carrying supplies to one of the booths.
A young lady hawking the king nuts shared my counter from which I sold my hot sweet sticky buns covered with cinnamon. She travels the faire circuit with her family and has a beautiful daughter with blue-grey eyes. She would shout out to the passerbys "The Kings Nuts!" and I would answer "The Kings Nuts You Say?" to which she would describe how tastey they were and invite people to try them for themselves and see why they were a favorite of the queen. I hawked the Cinnamon Rolls I sold by say saying that "hot sweet buns covered in cinnamon were a favorite of the king". As they got busy with customers there were some folks who asked me to sell nuts and I did readily to which at the end of the day The Kings Nuts people gave me about two ponds of nuts to take home with me. They were eagerly and greedily eaten by my family members.
During my break I went accross the Elephants Bridge and came up in front of The White Horse Pub. Some of the pictures I lost included the Burley Musician himself Jim Hancock playing a Bedlam Bard song; "The moonlight gleamed off her handcuffs as she gave me the back of her hand. And the whip came down as I lay there tied up in black leather bands". He was accompanied by the harpist duo Paracelt. This made a unique moment. I left the pub and saw Jerimiah Wiggins the storyteller carrying his tuffet shaped like a giant mushroom on his head. Another photo that was lost. A shot of a couple of chain maille covered visitors was also lost by my malfunctioning camera. The next photo lost was one that I wish most of had not been; I ran in Lord Cromwell on my way back to the kitchens as I crossed Eagles Crossing bridge. I asked him to pose for a flemish portrait, he obliged. I commented that it had been some time since the towne has been visited by his personage. Personally I like the scoundrel and missed him after he was executed several seasons ago.
Back to work until the end of the day. My imediate manager had gotten the rest of the afternoon off to go to his high school prom. I hawked my "sweet buns covered with cinnamon" the rest of the afternoon. It was during this time that good friend Captain Latimer was passing my counter that I yelled how I had "hot sticky buns" he paused and commented that was "just plain sick". I sold several Cinnabons until the end of day, while I watched the court dance from my booth and I hollered everytime I saw a fairy. I heard the cannons closing shot and quickly turned in my cash and coin with the assistance of Julie the Faires HR person and the Kitchen Manager Connie. Both are very wonderful people who make sure things work professionally and smoothly with attention to both the staffs needs and managements interests.
I walked up through the site and stopped to admire Lizs work on the garden outside the Gutenburg Press. I got a great hanshake and welcome from Roger. I saw my good and old friend Troy coming down from the tower with a nice new camera to use for the Ye Olde Newes. Ah camera envy did not truly hit as I did not know yet that my own camera had dumped its storage. I saw lots of people whose names escape me but their significance does not because they are the faire as much as the site is itself. I met up with my family in the parking lot and we drove home as night settled on the Central Texas landscape. It was a great day.

The following is a collection of suggestions found searching the AFR news group for ways to "Beat the Heat at Faire";

My method of coping--drink a lot and don't move too fast. As with most of the others, I drink water or lemonade all day. I also think it is quite important to start off the day with a lot of liquid. Before I even set foot in faire in the morning I drink roughly a pint of water and a pint of Gatorade. And, crass as it might be, I monitor my urination closely for color and frequency during faire--a health barometer, as it were. Too yellow or too infrequent, and I sit down and guzzle for a while. And I also make sure I eat during the faire day. I never eat huge amounts, but I make sure that I am not going to collapse from not ingesting enough calories during the day.

When someone is overheated, water on the temples and wrists and under the chin is the quickest cool off : those are pulse points. Just don't use ice directly, it can cause shock to an over heated body

I would suggest ice on the inside of the wrist and ankle. Any pulse points will cool your body when you apply ice to them. Even cool water will help a lot. This is one reason that the ice in the bodice trick works so well.

Fans are also very period.

Carry a fan. Particularly the stationary feathered ones were gentlemen's accessories too

Make sure you remember to eat midday: in extreme heat and humidity, one often doesn't feel hungry, but you need the fuel to keep going. Make yourself have a cool salad wrap or an ice or fruit.

If you do wear a kilt or dress, without some style of tights (ie, knee high hosen) then add cotton bike shorts to remove the chafing factor.

The misters that so many booths had, actually were very useful for cooling off...

Scarborough has a "Misting Bridge" near the Crown Kitchens.

Drink lots of water, stay out of the direct sunlight as much as possible and avoid alcohol if you can.

Stick to the shade as much as possible.

Find shade whenever possible! Carry a small hanky/cloth to wet your face.

If you look around site around 2 or 3, you'll see many folks are gone or leaving. I use that time to sit quietly under a tree and listen to music or see a show. Time to be quiet.

When possible, stand or sit in the shade--even if it isn't much shade. Similarly, where possible, stand or sit where there is some air motion.

Plenty of veggies, plenty of water, limit the caffeine and hooch

Eat pickles/olives/peanuts salt stuff (apparently it helps you retain water.... If possible salt your non-alcholic beverage! If the pickles no longer taste salty then you've had enough.

Try to avoid the heavy fried and fatty foods if you can. A nice cool salad wrap, a chicken caesar salad, something lighter like grilled chicken breast or seafood

Consume some salty stuff, or even just eat some salt--I prefer the packets from Burger King. Every couple of hours lick a packet--it
should taste salty; if it doesn't, take more. Non-salty salt is a sign of electrolyte depletion.

If you are partaking of alchoholic beverages, try to maintain at least two mugs of water to each much of drink

If you go up to any beverage booth and nicely request some ice, they will nearly always give you some, gratis. But you have to make sure you're not pushy about it. If you ask with a smile and a "please" and a "thank you", they'll always refill your cup with ice!

I've been stuffing ice packs down mid-Tudor decolletage for over 15 years. I call it my "Tudor Ice Chest." I get quart-sized freezer-weight zip-lock bags, fill them 1/2 full, fold them over and shove them down my cleavage into that little 'void spot' right under the bust and over the heart.

See if you can devise a way to copy the ladies' "ice down the cleavage" trick - just be sure to double-bag the ice.

If you're drinking water until you slosh and still can't pee, go out to your car, start it up and grab 15-20 minutes of AC. This will bring your body temp down to the point that you can pee.

Heat management starts with costume design. Natural fibers. Light colors. Gauzy or sheer-ish cotton (versus heavy-weight muslin)
chemises. Lace insets (breezeways) in bloomers and sleeves. Hat that breathes. Fan. Parasol (yes, even for foppy male courtier types). Two or three hankies (wet and dry). Ice pack pockets in doublets and, yes, even hats. Big drinking vessel, versus small one that doesn't hold much.

Something I've always used under my full plate armor is a nice little cotton duck vest that I constructed myself... with pockets all over it. Those little blue liquid ice packs are a godsend on stifling days... I've even had condensation on my armor!

I know someone who made a man's doublet with large inside pockets in the back and both front lining pieces that could be fairly easily accessed while wearing it. These pockets were specifically intended for those blue gel ice packs. Seems to work nicely.

If you can, stay away from the dark colors. the darker the colors, the more heat you absorb. Pale colors (cream, white, tan, gold, etc) reflect the sun, dark colors absorb it. So the darker the color you're wearing, the hotter you will be.

A light hat--cotton or straw or linen, vs wool. A tall hat or a straw hat works best--you lose ca 30% of body heat from your head.

Another thing which works well--a cloth with some ice on the back of your neck.

You know how people will go to saunas, and expensive spas to sweat, and loose weight? Well, the "Rennie Weight Loss Plan" is a simple one, where we allwear nobles, and other heavy garb in the summer time, and we sweat, while walking the faire site.So that's it. Don't worry about the heat, as that's all part of the plan. (the previous post was meant in fun, and in no way endorses heat stroke. Please do faire responsibly)

I find the kids (and me too!) do better when super-duper fully hydrated. For us the best weekends are the ones where I've started pushing water and gatorade/lemonade combo on them (and me) starting on Thursday or Friday. Yes we stop more on our Friday drives to faire but the difference is amazing. I like the 50/50 lemon lime gatorade/Countrytime lemonade blend, it seems to have enough good stuff in a tasty enough mix that my non-gatorade-loving kid will still drink it.

Ice down the bodice is one of the pre-requisites for ice-diving. Remember grape diving? This is similar, just as much fun, and more cooling.

Having spent several years living in the desert, including a few years
stationed in various desert environments whilst serving with the Marine
Corps as a Corpsman (medic), I consider myself a wee bit of an expert in hot weather issues.

Things I've learned.

Keeping hydrated is the single most important thing you can do. If you
screw up everything else, but stay hydrated, you'll survive.

Staying hydrated means drinking water, and lots of it. Alcohol and caffiene make matters worse. No matter how soothing that iced tea is, it won't keep you hydrated, it will actively dehydrate you. Drinks with high sugar-concentrations are also very bad. This means that non-caffienated sodas are also a no-no. Fresh lemonade, if not overly sweetened is fine, as long as you're also drinking water.

Throwing a lemon (or lime) in your water bag helps make the water more
palatable, especially when the water's not cold. I've heard some weird
theories about how lemons dehydrate you (you can tell because they make your mouth pucker!). I can say pretty confidently that it's a load of bollocks. Besides, they prevent scurvy!

Don't guzzle. Drink all day long in reasonable amounts. Getting "behind the "8 ball" then trying to re-hydrate in one big try will likely end up with you throwing up. If you manage to do this, you are *really* in trouble. At the very least, your day at faire is over.

The amount of clothing you wear is less of an issue than most people think. I've spent plenty a day in hot desert environments while wearing full combat gear, including body armor. Full-coverage clothing is good.
Loose clothing is good. Natural fiber clothing is mandatory. Synthetics, with few exceptions are absolutely horrible in the heat. This includes most natural/synthetic blends. This is one reason among many that the Marine Corps uniforms are always made of natural fibers.

I tend to prefer linen over cotton. IMO Linen wicks away the moisture
without absorbing as much of it. Granted, it's relative. My leine has
weighed twice it's normal weight at the end of particularly humid day. It's 8 yards of 60" linen, you figure it out. :) I also feel that linen doesn't "stick" to me as much as cotton does. Believe it or not, wool is also fine, as long as it's not really heavy "coat-weight" stuff. My trews are 100% wool, and I've never felt uncomfortable in them.

And in case you, or someone you're with gets in trouble...

Heat exhaustion: Cool, pale, clammy, sweaty skin. The body is doing everything it can to get rid of heat, but can't keep up. The person will be faint, dizzy, tired, lightheaded and/or nauseous. Get this person to shade, loosen any restrictive clothing, allow *small* sips of water, then get medical help. It's not immediately life-threatening, but at this point it will probably take intra-venous fluids to get them back to normal.

Heat Stroke: If you think *you* have heat-stroke, you don't. Someone who has heat stroke will not be capable of thinking that clearly. This person will have red, dry, hot skin, and will definitely not be mentally "with it". They may even appear drunk. In this case, the body's cooling system has completely given up. This is an *absolute medical emergency*. If this person doesn't get to a hospital quickly enough, they will *die*.

Did they give a reason as to why no webcam? Maybe some wonderful soul
could take it over. A prominent shop perhaps. I wonder what it would
take to set one up out there. I agree the web cam is a wonderful
thingy!!! I lived through the webcam last year on weekends that I had
to work my mundane job, and even went through the previous weekend cam
shots stored on the site and screen captured the moments that I stood
in front of the cam on the weekend I was able to visit. See...

Sure would be nice if there was a web cam this year.

That's no fun! I always loved looking at it before I went out there if
I was running a bit behind. Or, if my GF at the time was lagging I would show it to her and say "Look what we are missing, it's a gorgous day, get you ass in gear!" ..

back again this year? It was over the Eagle Crossings bridge I believe
and offered a great view.

The horns that were being talked about are the pointy variety, not
the musical kind.

And I haven't seen or heard *anything* anywhere that would lead me to
believe this rumour to be true. Reminds me of the rumour several
years ago that Scarborough wasn't going to allow the sale of Pagan-
related items (you know, pentacles, etc.) in the shops. Turned out to
be *completely* untrue, despite how very up in arms several folks got

Looking forward to seeing you this season! :~)

The Sneak Peek!

Subject: Photos from Scarborough's Cast Promotion April 5th 2003

Heres a sneak peek from yesterdays April 5th promotion that was held by the cast at a DFW area mall;
It seems the royal party stopped along their journey to the towne of Scarborough and found themselves in a
most unusual place...
http://thenewfrontier.netfirms.com/s2003/promo.html.

On the web page there is a photo of the full size replica of Henry the VIII's ship Mary Rose under construction at the faire site in
Waxahachie. I saw Scarborough's Lord Rooke who told me the old ship Cathherine which had washed up on our shore many years ago had finally washed back out to sea, however a new ship has washed up which they tend to do quite often in Scarborough. We both speculated this may have something to do with the large number of pirates that frequent the port of Scarborough among them The Corsairs who can be found drinking and singing at the new ship.

Keep in touch!

------------------------------------

Saturday the 5th of April was very full and pleasant. The weather became slightly cloudy but the light wind kept it fresh. Spring is in motion and Bluebonnets lined the highway west. Grapevine Mills Mall is a very colorful and technological theatre. Passing through the entry doors provided a voice that was right out of a SCI-FI movie sound track. Overhead were large screen tv's and it was amusing to watch members of the cast stop and see advertisements for the 23rd season of the faire displayed, they pointed and giggled and wondered aloud about the moving painting and the useen voice. The mall pedestrians had great fun meeting the cast. I saw a group of women and young girls gather around some of the richly dressed ladies and marvel at their clothing. I saw other members of the cast pondering the map on the mall directrory and the treasure it lead to. Outside on a grassy area the royal court held a lovely dance in which the King and Queen danced with the other court carrying gold masks. It ws lots of fun seeing great friends and everyone looked terrific. The first person I saw was a very dear friend to me, Friar Francis. Another dear old friend, Captain Latimer gave me a warm welcome. The beauty of Spain was visited upon me by the noble Contessa. The cast is a collection of the warmest people on earth.

The drive south to Waxahachie was equally nice. The first person I saw was a dear friend, Iceman Mike. There was quite a large turn-out at the orientation for workers. There were easily 35-50 people on standby as all the positions were already filled. Guess the word has spread about how good it can be to work at the faire. Coy genuinely welcomed everyone and gave a great presentation especially shown during the subjects of character and BFA. He clearly described "The Bubble" we work so hard to create. He really warmed us up for the 23rd season with newes about new improvements and construction. The new HR folks Julie and Olga were very helpful and handled the overflow of willing workers very well. The head of security, Rex, went over the rules and from working the last few years at the faire I can say there is no change, a safe enviroment like always. Rick head of grounds spoke and then people were sent of to their various managers for specific orientation. Garb was available for purchase and could be deducted from pay. There is quite a bit of new construction going on, the kitchens in Pecan Grove is 3 stories tall now. Some of the games and rides have been relocated and improved. Rick is working from 6am until 11am using floodlights in the dark getting it all ready for opening. Coy, Richard and Marsha, truly welcomed "the family home".

After orientation I went around and looked at the new ship under construction, I saw that there is a new Villa up by Crown Pavillion. Many of the buildings in the towne that were single story are now two, and the ones that were two are growing a third. Skyscrapers they are. I had to go to Eagles Crossing just to touch the gnomes. I visited with some friends in the upstairs of their shoppe and enjoyed the view and happy company. When it grew time to go I left accross Elephants bridge and stopped by the Gutenberg to vist my good friends there. Liz and Roger were busy happily working on the shoppe and Poppa Smurf was enjoying himself getting ready some of the elecrtric carts from Dragon Wagons. They all stopped what they were doing and gave me a warm welcome. Scarborough is truly one of the best places in this world.

One week until the faire opens!

The Yahoo Group has grown to 24 members. Initially people could not read the messages in the "archive", this was due to a setting in the Group Management. I have hopefully corrected the problem and folks should be able to read the messages. I appologize for the inconvenience this caused anyone and I am impressed that the members in the group tolerated the problem. A big THANK YOU for hanging in there.

Events today were 1.) A terrific chat with Lerxst of Chaos. Lerxst; I am proud to welcome you and thank you for representing your noble group here. 2.) We welcomed the Moor of Dundee. Looking forward to the great participation I have seen you exhibit in other groups and the experience you bring with music of the faire. 3.) The message problem conquered; *whew*. 4.) A posting about "protesting", which I will address further in this blog. 5.) More information found from The Scarborough Ghost; specifically regarding The Trysting Tree.

Early today a new member posted a message "that many people will not be attending the Scarborough Faire this year for various reasons of protest, concerning new rules and regulations that have been drawn up." I searched the AFR and other groups and found nothing mentioned relating to anyone protesting or boycotting, I could not find any mention of "concerning new rules and regulations". I did find in various archives that over the years there have been several "boycotts" at various faires. One in particular was in 1996 when it was rumored that the crafts director had banned sale of "pagan items" (ie. pentagrams, unicorns, etc.), the aforementioned craft director personally responded to to the allegations and stated there was in fact NOT a ban on such items. This went un-noticed by the posters and over the thread they went on to say they would be attending Hawkwood. I was amused by this as over the history of the Hawkwood Faire there were numerous "boycotts" that plagued that faire. I sent the originator of this post a message off group for more information, I am hoping he will reply or post again. I admit to over-reacting and initially pulling the message instead of like most things in life just letting it run it's course. I guess I panicked over something threating something that I care very much about.

Now for some fun stuff...

The tale of The Scarborough Ghost occurs at the "Trysting Tree" which is described as being "facing the field where the sheep and dog demonstrations occur. To the left used to be the space reserved for new vendors. If you follow that path down, you'll come to the branching that leads off to the participant camping area. Just outside the Fairegrounds is a large tree." The tree is called a trysting tree. In found that in fact there is a real trysting tree in old english history...

"The Yew at Ankerwyke House, near Staines, was noted when Magna Carta was signed in 1215. It was also the trysting tree for Henry VIII. and Anne Boleyn."

Another description of it read...

"There are the ruins of an old priory in the grounds of Ankerwyke House, which is close to Picnic Point, and it was round about the grounds of this old priory that Henry VIII. is said to have waited for and met Anne Boleyn."

And further searches found this information...

"Ye Old Yew Since the dawn of time an old yew tree and Ankerwyke Priory have always been mentioned together. This old yew tree, 40-50 feet from the remains of the Priory, was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. The area was used by Henry the VIIIth to court Anne Boleyn for it was close to Windsor but away from prying eyes and was accessible by water. Possibly the King had leant on the Church, as he was want to do, to enable his private trysting place.

A picture of the famous tree can be found at The Ankerwyke Yew. The page says the tree is believed to 2,500 years olde.
